Following our recent General Assembly, Piotr and I are pleased to send you this joint message, highlighting the challenges and opportunities facing our profession in the European Union.
On 1st July, the Spanish Presidency took over the Presidency of the Council of the European Union for a period of 6 months. As indicated in its programme, these next few months will be used to initiate discussions on the revision of animal welfare legislation, which is expected to be published in the 3rd quarter of 2023. As we know, the revision of this legislation represents a turning point for our profession, with the introduction of provisions encouraging best practices in terms of animal welfare.
The fight against antimicrobial resistance is also a priority at European level and is part of the “One Health” approach, emphasising the links between environmental, animal and human health. For this reason, sectoral collaboration has been organised by the Council in order to exchange views on the management of cross-border health threats and thus strengthen disease surveillance and the funding of preventive measures, while working to improve the education and training of new professionals. As veterinarians, we have to play a key role on this topic.
Piotr, as a former UEVP President would like to thank everyone for four years of reading, hoping that this newsletter is useful for vets in European countries. Congratulations and best wishes for Volker in his new position. May the news he forwards to you be only positive!
