During its annual in-person meeting, on 28 March in Brussels, the joint Animal Welfare Working Group of the UEVP and the FVE (photo) discussed many current topics, including the protection of animals during transport, the welfare and traceability of cats and dogs, fur farming and the state of the relevant EU legislation. UEVP board members Giovanbattista Guadagnini (in the middle, with tie) and Kenhelm Lewis (2nd from right) attended the meeting, as did Ann Criel (6th from right, on behalf of Fecava). Also on the agenda: the status of tail docking in piglets and the welfare of animal actors used in film and on television. A position paper will be drafted on the use of animals in entertainment.
Updates on the animal welfare status for these and other topics will be presented at the UEVP and FVE general assemblies in June. In October 2024, the FVE already called for an 'urgent need to respect the welfare of animals during transport'.
