As part of its six-month rotating presidency of the EU Council, which currently holds until June 2025, Poland hosted a conference on 24 April in Warsaw on the use of insect protein in animal nutrition.
In this role, Poland chairs over EU Council meetings and preparatory bodies, playing a key part in shaping the EU’s policy agenda.
The Event, organised in collaboration with the Polish Ministry of Agriculture, brought together experts from EU Member States and candidate countries, alongside representatives from the European Commission, including DG SANTE. The conference addressed the current EU legal framework and practical considerations related to the use of insect protein in animal feed, including for pets and certain livestock, within the context of sustainability and food safety.
On the same date, 24 April, the European Commission published an implementing act concerning a method for measuring carbonate levels in animal feed.
Although this method was withdrawn in 2024, the European Commission considered it still necessary to quantify carbonates in certain authorised feed additives (such as lanthanum carbonate octahydrate) and to measure calcium carbonate levels in feed materials where declaration is mandatory under EU law.
To ensure accurate and consistent controls across the EU, the Commission has decided to officially reintroduce the measurement method.
