In an interview with VetMagazin Slovenia, Ann Criel, Fecava President and UEVP Board member, reflects on her career in small-animal practice, leadership and the future of veterinary medicine.
Rethinking feline care
As a pioneer of a dedicated cat clinic in Belgium, Ann Criel has seen first-hand how adapting the environment can transform feline care. 'We no longer treat cats as small dogs,' she recalls, stressing the importance of reducing stress and understanding feline behaviour.
Building confidence and supporting colleagues
For Ann, leadership is about trusting others and creating strong teams. She also believes veterinary education should offer more than technical knowledge. 'Young veterinarians often don’t lack information – they lack confidence.' Congresses, mentoring and professional networks can help build that confidence and a sense of belonging.
Keeping the human side at the centre
As Fecava President, Ann advocates for veterinary wellbeing, recognition of general practitioners and stronger engagement with European policy. She sees AI as a valuable clinical tool, but not a substitute for human interaction. 'It will never sit beside a family whose dog is dying,' she says. Her message to younger colleagues is simple: “Don’t underestimate yourself.”
