Companion animal vets with an interest in extreme breeding and/or pet ID are invited to share their experience via two surveys launched by the European Commission. Input from veterinary practitioner is particularly welcomed for feedback on the proposed Regulation on the welfare of dogs and cats and their traceability.

Deadlines 15 and 30 July

Survey 1 focuses on the excessive conformation and genetic diseases of cats and dogs (deadline 15 July). Key issues include the impact of exaggerated physical traits, breeding strategies and how veterinarians can support better welfare outcomes. Survey 2 is about traceability, databases and IT systems regarding the identification and registration of cats and dogs (deadline 30 July).

Evidence-based recommendations

The surveys, conducted by a consortium including Arcadia International, Utrecht University, Wageningen University & Research, aims to develop evidence-based recommendations to improve breeding practices and enhance digital traceability tools across the EU. Veterinarians are invited to share the links with their colleagues.
