During the 20 March FVE webinar on peste des petits ruminants (PPR), European experts highlighted a key concern: how prepared is the veterinary community for the potential spread of PPR across Europe? Detection of the disease is particularly challenging due to variable and non-specific clinical signs, allowing undetected circulation and complicating surveillance efforts.

A Europe-wide effort to assess preparedness

To address these challenges, the University of Surrey, in collaboration with FVE and other partners, has launched a Europe-wide survey aimed at understanding veterinarians’ awareness, experience and readiness to manage PPR. The online questionnaire takes approximately 20 minutes to complete. Participation is voluntary and anonymous, with data securely stored and used solely for research purposes.

Your input matters

Veterinary professionals across Europe are encouraged to contribute their insights. The findings will help shape both national and EU-level preparedness frameworks, supporting more effective surveillance, early detection, and coordinated responses. The initiative is part of the European Union Partnership on Animal Health and Welfare SOA22 and seeks to map current preparedness levels and identify gaps in surveillance and response systems.
