On 2 April 2025, the EU commissioner for Health and Animal Welfare Olivér Várhelyi, responded to a written question submitted by two Spanish MEPs from the EPP concerning the upswing outbreak of animal diseases in the European Union.
In he reply, the Commission stated that it is “in constant and close contact with the competent authorities of the Member States to analyse and manage animal disease outbreaks”.
The European Commission also recalled that :
- It provides support to competent authorities and stakeholders “through training initiatives, such as the Better Training for Safer Food (BTSF), and the deployment of the EU Veterinary Emergency Team (EUVET)”;
- Antigen and vaccine banks for certain animal diseases managed by the Commission are made available to the Member States in case of need;
- The European Union co-funds certain disease control measures performed by the Member States for priority animal diseases through veterinary programmes and emergency measures.
