On 7 March, an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease was confirmed by the World Health Organisation (WOAH) on a large cattle farm (1400 cattle) in the village of Kisbajcs, near Györ, in north-west Hungary, near the Slovak border. The case was confirmed by PCR by the Hungarian Veterinary Diagnostic Directorate (NEBIH), but the result of the serotype is still pending at the time of publication. Stamping out, movement restrictions and other control measures are underway. The last outbreak in Hungary dates back to 1973.
The outbreak comes just under two months after the outbreak on a domestic buffalo farm near Berlin, in Germany. For more information see the general WOAH page on foot and mouth disease and the page for the latest updates of this outbreak.
