On 27 November, 30 Dutch veterinary organisations signed a mental wellness manifesto, a declaration of intent for the ‘structural improvement of the mental health of veterinary professionals’. A survey published earlier this year revealed the poor state of mental health of veterinarians in the Netherlands. By signing, parties declare their intention to make extra efforts regarding veterinary mental health.
For ‘a future-proof veterinary sector’
Focus of the manifesto is based on three pillars: strengthening ‘veterinary vitality’, increasing social safety and banning inappropriate behaviour. Together with professional organisations, stakeholders, veterinary clinics and veterinary professionals, signatories declare to support ‘a future-proof veterinary sector allowing professionals exercising their job with joy and pride.’
‘Purple heart’ support initiatives
At the occasion of signing the manifesto, a number of initiatives of the so-called ‘purple heart’ network were announced (purple is the colour traditionally associated with veterinary sciences). These include an online website for resources, courses and events on veterinary mental health, to be launched early December; a new telephone helpline for veterinary professionals; and KNMvD Konnect, a networking platform mainly aimed at young graduates and their coaches.
