Nikolaus Kriz has been nominated as the next Executive Director of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) for a five-year term starting in September 2025. The Austrian veterinarian, who first trained as an equine practitioner, has been with EFSA since 2017. He currently heads ESFA's Risk Assessment Services (ENABLE) Department. Before joining EFSA, he served in various roles at the European Medicines Agency (EMA).
Recognition of the veterinary One Health approach
‘I am honoured and grateful to be nominated to lead EFSA,’ said Dr. Kriz. ‘Together with its exceptional staff and experts, I look forward to guiding the organisation as we continue our vital mission to protect the health of EU citizens, animals, plants and the environment.’ His nomination reflects not only strong scientific leadership but also the increasing recognition of the unique One Health approach that veterinarians bring to the table.
