The British Small Animal Veterinary Association (BSAVA) has contributed to ongoing consultations by the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) as part of its market investigation into UK veterinary services for pets. Together with other professional bodies — including the British Veterinary Association (BVA), British Veterinary Nursing Association (BVNA), Society of Practising Veterinary Surgeons (SPVS) and the Veterinary Management Group (VMG) — BSAVA responded to five initial CMA working papers in March 2025 and a further remedies consultation in May 2025.
Better utilisation of nurses
Key points raised in this joint response include the need for clear communication around business ownership, pricing and affiliated services, as well as responsible prescribing and medicine costs. BSAVA also supports 'better utilisation of registered veterinary nurses' and calls for mandatory practice regulation and an 'effective, proportionate complaints process.'
Veterinary fee explainer
For improved communication and transparency around costs, the BSAVA has developed resources to help practices explain veterinary fees and deliver contextualised care on a budget. Finally, the association urges that any remedies proposed by the CMA be introduced carefully, to avoid unintended consequences. BSAVA 'will continue collaborating with other veterinary organisations to achieve outcomes that benefit the profession, clients and animal welfare.'
