Veterinary professional bodies in the Netherlands have agreed to join forces to create a federation, to be launched in July 2026. The new federation, first of its kind in Europe, will be the umbrella for professional organisations representing veterinarians (KNMvD, CPD), veterinary nurses (Vedias) and animal physiotherapists (NVFD). All members of these organisations will need to be listed in the register of veterinary professionals.

Defending the interests of the veterinary sector

‘Creating a federation reflects the conviction that together, we are stronger, while retaining our own identity,’ Sophie Deleu, KNMvD president, explains. Key tasks will be defending the interests of the sector, strengthening collaboration between veterinary professional groups and quality control thanks to professional standards, mandatory re-registration and continuing education.

Common interests only

The board of the federation (consisting of three vets, one veterinary nurse and one animal physiotherapist) will only defend the common interests of the member organisations. The federation – to be called Federatie KNMVD – will have its own office and will make agreements with the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Food Safety and Nature about quality control of the veterinary professions (i.e. code of conduct).

‘Together we stand stronger’

‘This is an important step for the future of our professions. Together, we stand stronger, are able to enhance our professional quality and are in a better position to respond to societal matters regarding animals and their health.’ Legal, financial and organisational steps are now underway. Three years after its creation, the federative model will be evaluated.
